Tea over time

  • • Hosai is the 16th generation of ceramicists
  • • He is deeply connected to the philosophy of tea ceremony
  • • The dappled patterns reminiscent of deer’s spots characterise his work

Hosai Matsubayashi works for Asahiyaki, a ceramic art and atelier that is over 400-year-old and based in Kyoto prefecture. This has been the historic centre of the Japanese tea ceremony culture since the 16th century. The kiln, established by the first generation master Tosaku, was named “Asahi”. Evoking self-awareness, appreciation for nature and a spiritual connection between those sharing the moment are the essence of this ritual. Honouring Enshu’s aesthetic philosophy of "Kirei-sabi" (beauty and simplicity), Hosai continues the lineage of Asahiyaki. Compared to his predecessors, Hosai's ceramics are made with gentle colours and contemporary features that continue innovating tradition.

Chawan tea bowl

This is a traditional Asahiyaki Kase style tea bowl made with the fine-grained soil of Uji, that is mined and left for aging over a half century before use. The unique pattern resembles deer’s spots, created by the characteristics of the clay and the firing process using split pine wood in a climbing kiln. It is a reinterpretation of the Korai tea bowl called "ido" in the Asahiyaki style.

Chawan tea bowl

This is a new Asahiyaki style created by the 16th generation Hosai with the poured, light blue "Geppaku" (or moon-white) glaze. This work expresses a modern interpretation of the aesthetic sense of "kirei sabi" that is the basis of Asahiyaki. The vivid light blue of the Geppaku glaze contrasts with the primitive scarlet of the rough clay burnt by the flames. The white clay connects these contrasts to create a modern and unique expression.

Kahin Seiki teapot set

The "Hohin" style teapot without the handle has been inherited since the period of the eighth generation "Chobei". Inside the teapot, 150 tea strainer holes are carefully created at 1.5mm. This teapot is made to brew Sencha and Gyokuro tea deliciously. For the past 150 years, this teapot has developed along with the tea culture of Uji. The Celadon glaze pairs well with the colour of green tea and represents the clear stream of the Uji River.

Chawan tea bowl

A typical expression of an Asahyaki tea bowl, characterised by the warm, orange-coloured Hanshi clay that resembles the morning sun. The clay is excavated and selected from Shirakawa and Oriiyama in Uji. The dappled pattern that develops from the clay is also a unique characteristic of this clay. The clay was mined during the period of the 14th Hosai and is aged and used for over 50 years. The more you use this tea bowl, the more you will enjoy the subtle changes that come along with the use.

Chawan tea bow

This new style of tea bowl combines the light blue “Geppaku” (moon-white) glaze with gold-painting. Gold-painting was originally developed as a technique to paint ceramics, but this work emphasises the texture of gold by expressing it as calligraphy rather than painting and opens up a new frontier for Geppaku glazing. The gold applied to the base creates an austere expression that seems to sink into the clay, while the gold applied to the glaze emits a glow. The original primitive expression of the clay, the scarlet colour brought out by the flames, the white clay, the vivid light blue of the glaze and the gold are layered together to create an attractive tea bowl.
