Thick with flowers

  • • Bergmann has been living in Japan for more than 20 years
  • • He mixes Scandinavian style with Japanese sensibilities
  • • His signature product is the flower box

One day, many years ago, a customer came into Nicolai Bergmann’s shop in Tokyo and asked for 600 flower gifts for a press event. "He didn’t have much space to store them," says the world famous Danish flower designer, who has been living in Japan for almost 25 years. "So I had to come up with a new idea. As staking was the key, I made many small bouquets and put them into boxes." His signature item was born: since then, Bergmann’s studio has been producing 15,000 flower boxes a month. "I still enjoy making them myself, sometimes – it’s so meditative." Yet his activities vary a lot, from floral art to floral styling for weddings and events and teaching. "I love my job because there are new things going on every day. I am fortunate because I do what I like and with it I make people happy."

Yanagawa with flower

Created for the Hanami 2050 exhibition in Fukuoka, this piece is characterised by the dynamic use of black bamboo, contrasting with the soft petals of alstroemeria and orchids. The reflection on the water makes the work complete and even more beautiful.

Roumon

This powerful piece was created for the Sakura Gate of Dazaifu Tenmangu, a Shinto shrine in Fukuoka prefecture, with an abundance of native flowers: protea, guzmania, allium, cast-iron plant and dracaena. It’s characterised by a very detailed leaf work: rolled leaves on the base and layered leaves containing the flowers.

Chamelaucium

An abundance of wax flowers – no bigger than 10 mm each – are packed together and harmonically arranged in a Japanese bowl. To complete the design, which is characterised by Nicolai’s attention to details, he used kudzu seeds of a different, darker colour.
