Craftsmanship and design in lighting

  • • Antonio and Luis work mainly with brass, but also aluminium, iron and stainless steel
  • • Modeling, embossing, welding, and lathing are their main techniques
  • • The work they do today is a benchmark of savoir-faire: technique and design

Antonio Monroy and Luis Lago first collaborated in 1998, and haven't stopped! Antonio was trained as machine tool manufacturing technician. After working for nine years in his father’s workshop, he started making and restoring handcrafted lamps. Luis is a self-taught designer with experience in lighting, dance and set construction. In 1998 they created their first lamps for a café and realised how much potential they had working together. They did so for several years, making it official in 2014 when they launched lago:monroy. Since then, they have made a name for themselves with the design, craftsmanship and restoration of tailored lamps and furniture, lighting projects and various collaborations with artists, decorators and designers. The work they do today is defined by their continuous search for the personality of the object in order to create a special communication channel between it, its environment and the person who observes it.

176

This table lamp has 176 legs, hence the name. All these legs allow you to move the 14 Watt LED light in any direction. The nucleus of the sphere is made in aluminium by a metal spinning process and the legs are made in brass rod. Both of these materials have a polished finish and no surface protection, so it will have a natural ageing.

Marco

This spotlight was designed for the Vigo Contemporary Art Museum’s restaurant lighting project, hence its name MARCO (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo). This piece, made in aluminium by a metal spinning process, is one of Lago:Monroy's most versatile creations. Based on the classic cone shape, it has a very smooth matte white finish and its light is ideal to create cosy spaces.

UFO dsk

UFO dsk is a table lamp, its shape evokes that of lighthouses and the colours chosen are the ones traditionally used by the fishermen of the Galician coast, to paint their boats. Made by metal spinning process, the base has a cone shape, with a white polished and lacquered finish, which gives it a porcelain feel and a high light reflection. The shade, gives the colour touch and reflects the light down, creating an intimate atmosphere.

UFO

UFO is a pendant lamp, designed for a restaurant lighting project. The search for simple shapes, with which they could control the light and use different colours to get a fun atmosphere, led Lago:Monroy to this design. Using mirror bulbs, they achieve a reflected light that creates a very comfortable environment.

Yoyó

Yoyó is an up and down ceiling light. Composed by two principal parts: a rectangular part – which has the LED stripe inside – and a circle counterweight – reminiscent of a yoyo. Both parts are connected by stainless steel wires, which allows for movement. These two parts create different horizon landscapes, which transform the simplicity of this piece into an attractive object. The light of the Yoyó, is ideal for dining or working tables.
