Biel Riera Crespí was born in Lloseta where he lives and works, as did his parents and grandparents. The Riera family specialises in the manufacture of Ikats, a fabric that has become part of Mallorca’s identity. The particularity of Ikats is that the cotton threads used to make the fabric are first dyed and then woven, so that the print is actually not a print but a woven pattern. The process requires a lot of accuracy but has spectacular results and was probably introduced to the island by oriental merchants.
Biel began working in the family business at 23, having gained some experience elsewhere. Since then, the Riera fabrics have become known worldwide and Biel is proud that even thousands of miles away, people seek out there sturdy and refined materials for their excellent quality.
