A surprised smile is Heinrich Schillling’s answer to the question why he decided to become a wood turner. Then he adds “I grew up in the workshop of my grandfather and my father, surrounded by wood and tools, the craft of wood turning was omnipresent and I never wanted to follow a different path”. His path led him to an apprenticeship, studies in product design, and ultimately to the rank of a master wood turner. Today Heinrich Schilling uses his grandfather’s tools to practice his mastery in craft. However, his works follow two different approaches: design and applied arts, both have been recognized and exhibited internationally.
