Creating a unique world in glass

  • • Morten started glassmaking when he was ten years old
  • • He has developed his own special techniques
  • • His work was recently exhibited in Japan

Like the surface of an unknown planet, Morten Klitgaard's artworks look otherworldly. By pushing the capabilities of glass to its limits and experimenting with new techniques, he creates works that don't look like glass at all, but ressemble something unconventional, like craters of a new moon, or relics discovered on the bottom of the sea. Morten fell in love with glassblowing as a child, learning the basics from his best friend’s father while growing up in the north of Jutland, Denmark. He went on to train for three years with the famous Danish glass artist Tobias Møhl. Since graduating from the Royal Danish Academy of Art in 2012, he has exhibited all over Europe and in Japan.

Fosforit

Fosforit is a journey into the porosity of glass. Morten has developed a technique to cover the surface of this blown-glass vessel in small bubbles that seem to erupt, giving the work a porous surface. Morten focuses on removing the transparency of the glass to give it a glaze-like effect.

Oro

Morten created the “Oro” series because he wanted the viewer to appreciate the true scale of the glass pieces. Hence, they have been produced to match the proportions of the human body. The transparency of the glass on the surface of this hand-blown vessel has been deliberately removed and replaced with opaque, earth-coloured, glaze-like effects.

Oro II

Morten’s latest works focus on surface effects. He removes the transparent quality of hand-blown vessels – part of his “Oro” series – and replaces it with opaque, earth-coloured, glaze-like effects. The “Oro” series is designed to make the viewer appreciate the true scale of the glass pieces, which are produced to match the proportions of the human body.

Voir

Morten’s latest works focus on surface effects, whereby the transparent quality of the pieces is removed and replaced with opaque, earth-coloured, glaze-like effects. In his “Voir” collection, Morten explores the plateau on top of each hand-blown glass piece, creating surfaces that provide space for the colours and bubbles to develop in their own way.
