Fulfilling a calling

  • • Marc-Jens designs collections as vignettes
  • • His first design, at the age of 17, was a pearl ring for his first love
  • • He choreographs gems and gold into bespoke pieces

Marc-Jens Biegel can be found in his workshop in Frankfurt, rain or shine, mounting a kaleidoscopic selection of stones and transforming lumps of precious metals into jewellery. After an apprenticeship with his father, he broadened his horizons by studying product design at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach and at Kingston University. Longing to perform each step from concept to completion, he opened his own workshop in 1998, right next to Frankfurt’s stock exchange. Like his father before him, he spends time gazing at his gems and gold through a loupe (a small magnifying glass), before reimagining them into surprisingly minimalist shapes. His designs have been exhibited across Europe.

Bolongaro pendant

Bolongaro is named after one of the largest private Baroque palaces in Frankfurt, Germany. The pendant is inspired by the subtle colours of this magnificent building, incorporating a natural orange garnet and intense red tourmaline. The gemstones are enhanced by the delicate curves of the cabochon cuts and the discreet gold settings.

Bolongaro rings

Garnets and tourmalines in shades of natural orange and deep red intensify the delicate cabochon-cut curves of these rings. The series was inspired by one of the largest Baroque palaces in Frankfurt, drawing upon the subtle colours of this magnificent building.

Louisa earrings

For these earrings, Marc-Jens found his inspiration in a historic park in southern Frankfurt. The arrangement of tourmaline and peridot gemstones creates a lively play of colours and light, suggesting leaves blowing in the wind. Different nuances and shapes appear, depending on the perspective.

Veneto

A deep indentation running around the middle of this ring gives the illusion of two separate elements fusing into a single form, symbolizing combined intimacy. The ring was forged from pure gold and set with a navette-cut aquamarine.

Mylius

Aquamarine stones in a discreet matt gold setting make up the core of these classically shaped earrings, topped by a diamond on the posts. The series is named after one of Frankfurt’s most influential architects.
