Materially-minded

  • • Roger is inspired by the shape and function of materials
  • • His work is influenced by his background in construction
  • • He never sketches his sculptures beforehand

Though he studied architecture and engineering, Roger Coll never forgot his roots. As a child, he would visit his farmer grandparents, dig his hands into the earth and play with clay. Growing up, he also studied sculpture, and while pursuing a career in construction, he became obsessed with materials. On building sites he became fascinated by the shape and consistency of wires, bricks, rolls, pipes, concrete, wood and debris. Later on, when developing his artistic vision, he was influenced by both his family background and his studies. Now a full-time artisan, he works on his own, making moulds, shaping, baking and glazing clay, in order to create one-of-a-kind sculptures.

Roger never starts one of his pieces knowing what it will look like, instead making each decision as the piece grows. This bright blue sculpture has been constructed from several moulded and slip cast stoneware pieces. The final bright blue is given by coloured slip. It is difficult for Roger to know when one of his pieces is finished, but this generally comes when he finds a coherence between form, scale, empty spaces and gesture.

Roger likes to think that we all have our own artistic language and sees each sculpture as a word that will help him define his. Scale, texture and colour are elements that help him set the tone and message of each piece. This bright red sculpture has been constructed from several moulded and slip cast stoneware pieces. Roger does not plan his pieces out but rather keeps constructing them until they feel coherent. The final bright red of this piece comes from coloured slip.

Most of Roger’s sculptures are constructed with various moulded and slip cast segments which are added together until Roger considers the overall construction to be coherent, much like bricks put together to make a structure. The use of repeated elements to build something unique fascinates him. The final brown colour of this sculpture comes from coloured slip.
