A true radical in a traditional craft

  • • Bastien loves the creative process and technical challenges of his craft
  • • In 2006 he received the Wallpaper Design Award for Best Oddity
  • • He believes he was always intended to be a marquetry artisan

Bastien Chevalier studied cabinetry for four years. Looking for a job, he knocked at the door of a cabinetry workshop in Sainte-Croix, where he found Jérome Boutteçon, Meilleur Ouvrier de France in wood marquetry. Although he had never had an apprentice, Boutteçon took Chevalier under his wing and for five years taught him everything about the fine craft of marquetry. Chevalier was born in the era of graffiti, a world that deeply inspires him. His very contemporary style departs radically from the traditional imagery usually associated with marquetry. The recognition of his work through international awards and exhibitions in salons and art galleries is growing day by day.

Bastien has adorned the dial of this unique Vacheron Constantin watch with chamois, goat-antelopes native to mountains in Europe. The detailed wood marquetry of the chamois captures the varied hues of their fur as well as their speed and agility.

L’Annonciatrice No. 2

One of Bastien’s wood marquetry sculptures, “The Herald” depicts a frog looking upwards, indicating the way in which frogs are said to be able to detect changes in the weather. The panel is fixed to a block of concrete with iron bars.

Tonda tourbillon rose gold Solo de Jazz

Bastien was commissioned to create this design, “Jazz Solo”, for the 2015 Montreux Jazz Festival. The dial of the Parmigiani Fleurier watch was decorated with a finely detailed micro marquetry portrait of a saxophonist.

L’heure d’été et d’hiver

For this innovative watch designed by Saskia maaike Bouvier, Bastien created a dial in micro marquetry. With two pairs of hands, the watch tells both summer and winter time: bright colours and a red beetle at the top for summer, a penguin against a cool beige landscape for winter.

This watch was created by Bastien for his own make, Mbch. With a depiction of Tinkerbell surrounded by a whirl of colour in micro marquetry, it was designed for his mother who loves fairy tales.
