A pleasance villa near Lake Maggiore

A few kilometres from Lake Maggiore stands Villa Della Porta Bozzolo, today a FAI property (FAI Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano is the Italian trust for the protection of historical, artistic and landscape heritage). Founded in the 16th century as the country residence of the Della Porta, a family of landowners, it had annexed rustic buildings, a wine press and cellars, a silk spinning machine. It then became a sumptuous summer residence, a 'pleasance villa' in the 18th century, when it was renovated for the wedding of Giovan Angelo Della Porta and Isabella Giulini.

The interiors of the Villa are decorated with rococo style frescoes depicting trompe l’oeil motifs, mythical and allegorical scenes and flower garlands. The precious original furnishings, such as a canopy bed covered in golden damask silk, are few, while the other furnishings come from generous donations. The Villa boasts a monumental Italian garden, enriched with over 500 varieties of roses and a remarkable sequence of carved stone terraces topped with a panoramic belvedere. In the 19th century, the Villa was saved from decay by senator Camillo Bozzolo, who left his rich library here.
