The history of the Vienna Technical Museum goes back more than 100 years. It was opened in 1918, nine years after Emperor Franz Joseph I. himself laid the foundation stone of the building. It is situated in Vienna’s 14th district and is only a walk away from the the Schloss Schönbrunn. The building is a sight to behold, but what one experiences inside is even more impressive. Technology is usually hard to grasp for people, yet they are constantly surrounded by it – both of which form part of its fascination.

The Vienna Technical Museum manages to give both younger and older people an understanding of the simplest, as well as more advanced technical principles and demonstrates them by showing their evolution with the exhibited models. For example, there are models of different kinds of ships, planes, cars but also of musical instruments or machines that are used in the heavy industry. Regardless of whether one is visiting the permanent or a special exhibition: no one will leave the museum not fascinated or enlightened.
