"Old in age, yet youthful in spirit, brimming with treasures, and ever-evolving," captures the essence of the Eastern Slovak Museum in Košice. With its more than 150-year existence, it ranks among the oldest and most important museums in Slovakia. Its mission has remained unchanged since its origins: to attract a wide range of visitors, from curious children to real art aficionados. The museum currently manages more than half a million items in three collections: history, art history and natural history.
The exhibition spaces are open to the public in several buildings located in the centre of Košice. Historická účeľová budova is a distinctive palace building of Neo-Renaissance architecture, purposefully constructed and designed to serve as a museum institution, making it the pioneering building of its kind in Slovakia. Its attractive exhibitions of craft and fine arts are a fusion of exceptional collections with a modern touch. The building has been the museum's permanent home since its very first exhibition in 1903.
