It’s hard to miss the Pysanka Museum, it’s located in a gigantic Easter egg-shaped building right in the centre of Kolomyia. Inaugurated in 2000, the flamboyant architecture conceals a definitive collection of pysankas or traditional Ukrainian painted eggs housing more than 12,000 items from various regions of Ukraine and other countries. The technique of wax-resist egg painting is a unique and centuries-old Ukrainian folk art. Entering this true realm of decorative eggs, you can find all the variations of this authentic craft carried out on chicken, goose, ostrich and quail shells.

There are eggs decorated with embroidery, wooden inlaid and carved, enameled and made of semi-precious stones. One of the must-sees of the museum is an ancient 500-year-old painted goose egg pysanka that was discovered during excavations in Lviv in 2013. The institution regularly houses exhibitions of Ukrainian masters of pysanka painting. It is one of the branches of the National Museum of Hutsulshchyna & Pokuttya Folk Art named after Yosaphat Kobrynsky.
