Situated in the cobbled streets of old town Plovdiv, the museum is a prime example of mid-19th century Baroque architecture. The buildings enclose a cosy yard and a nicely kept garden. Both interior and exterior decorations feature sophisticated floral patterns. The ceiling in each room has been woodcarved. Established in 1917, the institution has since become an important national landmark for preserving the day-to-day life and moores of the Bulgarian population, its culture and economic development.

Over the years it has accumulated over 60,000 artefacts, valuable testimonials displayed in six permanent exhibitions, each occupying a separate room dedicated respectively to agriculture, crafts, textiles and clothes, furniture and interiors, musical instruments and rituals, and works of fine art. The website of the museum offers a virtual walk inside its rooms and adds to the overall experience with virtual exhibitions giving a glimpse into Bulgarian Revival folk jewellery, fashion, lamps and clocks.
