The enduring legacy of Michael Thonet

The Zaprice Castle is located in Kamnik and known for its historical significance and various exhibitions. It dates back to the 14th century and has witnessed numerous renovations and changes of ownership. Today, the Kamnik Regional Museum is nestled within the walls of the castle. Among the permanent exhibitions is the collection of Thonet's furniture, which puts the remarkable ingenuity of Michael Thonet and the art of wood bending centre stage. His groundbreaking bentwood creations became a sensation in interior design, captivating fashion enthusiasts from the mid-19th century until the end of World War I.

Upon the expiration of Thonet's patent in 1869, factories taking up his techniques blossomed throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Among the most notable was the factory in Kamnik, which became a symbol of the region's rich tradition in Thonet-inspired craftsmanship. The Thonet collection at Zaprice Castle Museum showcases some of the iconic Thonet designs, as well as other pieces that exemplify the company's innovative approach to furniture manufacturing.
