Founded by Angeliki Giannakidou as a non-profit, mostly self-funded organisation, the Ethnological Museum of Thrace has been preserving the history and cultural heritage of the region of Thrace since 2002. The museum is housed in a prominent stone, neo-classical building constructed in 1899; one of the few still honouring the era’s architecture in the Greek city of Alexandroupolis.

Its collection comprises of 5,000 items and a rich archive of photographs, documents and books, of which 500 pieces are exhibited. Dating from the late 17th century to the early 20th century, these are organised into thematic sections, built around historical events and agricultural activities. Through artefacts, maps, photos, digital projections and a guided video tour, Thracians’ traditional attire, music, pottery art and eating habits come to life. The museum hosts educational programmes, workshops and events, while its café serves local dishes in an effort to showcase Thrace’s gastronomy.
