A traditional home frozen in time

Casa Macchi presents the charm of everyday life, in a way that was believed lost. Morazzone, a quiet Lombardy village, is where we can find life from another century intact, as though on a journey in a time machine. A pretty, little provincial building next to the church bell tower, Casa Macchi does not stand out for any extraordinary feature, but here it is possible to rediscover the traditional dimensions of domestic life for the middle classes in Lombardy during the 20th century. Meaningful objects will arouse the empathy and memories of visitors of this not-so-distant period.

Casa Macchi has held a shop in Piazza Sant'Ambrogio since the 19th century: it was in turn a delicatessen, a butcher's shop, a hairdresser, a tailor's, a stationery shop. Now it is a general store for the community, and a historic workshop with contemporary ideas around sustainability. This is part of a local project to revitalise historic centres at risk of depopulation in Italy. Casa Macchi was bequeathed to FAI - Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano, the Italian trust for the protection of historical, artistic and landscape heritage, by Maria Luisa Macchi in 2015.
