Ancient art of Venetian masks

Founded in 1984, Ca’ Macana has revived the ancient art of making papier-mâché Venetian masks. In the shop, located in Dorsoduro, Calle delle Botteghe, close to the workshop, you will be mesmerised by the display of truly unique pieces, each one handmade and hand decorated. Examples vary from classic Venetian masks, such as “moretta” and “bauta” – reproduced from paintings by Longhi and Guardi – as well as the whole series of Commedia dell’Arte. Contemporary creations show that innovation is central to their activity, among the most notable examples are the models made for Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, the most experimental creations cannot be seen anywhere else, nor purchased online. At the shop, visitors can touch, try on and photograph the masks to complete the experience.
