The Angra do Heroísmo Museum, founded in 1969 is set in the former S. Francisco Convent. It is an important cultural institution in Azores, with a diverse collection reflecting the history of the region, the impact of its geostrategic location in the Atlantic and the conflicts that have occured since the 15th century. With these came many novelties that can be seen here, material testimonies from art to technology. Notable are its collections of military history and transport from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The collection also includes painting, ceramics and furniture, depicting the lives, travels and culture of the people from Terceira. Technical and scientific instruments, civil and religious attire, toys and musical instruments are also on view. The MAH, in cooperation with the Regional Center for Handicraft Support, has a regular offer of exhibitions resulting from residencies between local artisans and designers. Guided visits, talks and a wide range of workshops are offered.
