3+1 Gallery opened in 2007, co-directed by Jorge Viegas and James Steele, with the aim of promoting the work of emerging and established Portuguese and International artists, whose works illustrate the diversity of contemporary artistic practice. The gallery presents programmed exhibitions over two floors. Two represented artists notably hold craftsmanship at the core of their work, Claire de Santa Coloma and Carlos Noronha Feio. Claire creates beautiful organic wooden sculptures herself and Carlos works with Arraiolos artisans who use a traditional portuguese rug embroidery technique from the 15th century to create nuanced wall pieces.
