When Einar Wallquist moved to Arjeplog to work as a provincial doctor in the 1920s, he developed a significant interest in local history. A passion that led him to become a collector of objects and artefacts related to the Sámi settlers. When he retired, the doctor donated his collection to the city, who established the Silver Museum (Silvermuseet), which was inaugurated in 1965. The museum is located in the heart of Arjeplog, in a former Sámi school.

The exhibition rooms illustrate Arjeplog’s nature, history and Sámi culture. The silver hall stands out as the authentic treasure of the museum, showing a wide collection of Sámi ornaments and handicrafts. Local products and souvenirs are available at the museum’s shop, which work serves as a tourist information office. Since 2009, the museum collaborates with the interdisciplinary Institute for Arctic Landscape Research (INSARC).
