The Sámi Museum (Ájtte Museum) has been open to the public since 1989, when it was established in Jokkmokk, north of the Artic Circle. The museum lies in the Laponia World Heritage Site, within Swedish Lapland, which is also one of the Sámi’s historical settlements. The museum focuses on the surrounding mountainous area, and the history and traditions of the Sámi people.

The museum’s permanent exhibition highlights the region’s heritage, events and customs. The sections focused on Sámi Duoudje (crafts) and on Sámi silver and traditional dresses are of particular interest. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, a library and an archive. There is also a restaurant and a shop selling interesting handcrafted accessories produced by local companies and artisans.
