The Porzellanmuseum was founded in 2011 by Erhard Grossnigg. The permanent exhibition, Auseigenen Stücken, showcases the history of Viennese porcelain from 1718 until now. From the Chinese origins of porcelain to the reaction of Europe’s nobility to its invention, the focus shifts to the individual exhibits. 150 porcelain pieces guide the visitor through different eras of the last 300 years, and show how Augarten has continuously moved with the times. The exhibition celebrates the variety of patterns, shapes and sizes, which all reflect the needs and tastes of their respective eras.
The exhibition also shows the multitude of famous designers which Augarten has collaborated with, and demonstrates how designers and craftspeople in unison developed new techniques for processing porcelain. The museum beautifully introduces the long-standing and fascinating history of Viennese porcelain, one of the most luxurious materials invented by human hands.
