Experience the staging of an iconic production

Enter a rich visual world in this evocative exhibition which demonstrates the importance of master artisans to the world of theatre. Discover the singular vision of iconic American visual artist and director Robert Wilson, whose 1993 production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at the Paris Opera was inspired by Japanese theatrical traditions. Drawing on elements of this production, Wilson transforms the former Gandini swimming pool into a dramatic stage with his signature use of lighting, sound and visual effects. Enjoy video footage of famed choreographer Suzushi Hanayagi, original costumes by Frida Parmeggiani, ink drawings by Wilson himself and props made by Japanese artisans including the exquisitely lacquered WAITING chair upon which Butterfly sits.

In the 1970s Robert Wilson travelled to Japan, a mind-opening visit he says changed his life forever. The theatrical stars he met there, and the experience he had of kabuki and noh theatre were, he says, a validation of what he was doing in his own work. The result of this life-changing visit is reflected in this immersive experience, which invites visitors to enter a suspended space rich in visual and artisanal references, where the craftsmanship of Japanese theatre is illuminated to stunning effect. Texas-born Robert Wilson is one of the world’s foremost theatre directors and visual artists. His works for the stage unconventionally incorporate a wide variety of artistic media including dance, movement, lighting, sculpture, music and text. His productions have been acclaimed by audiences and critics worldwide, and he has won numerous awards including the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale, two Premio Ubu Awards and an Olivier Award, as well as a nomination for the Pulitzer Prize. His drawings, paintings and sculptures have been exhibited internationally and are held in private and public collections around the world.
