Guided tour of the Furnace

During this guided tour of the Furnace, guests become protagonists of Orsoni’s manufacturing process by actively participating in the “assaggio del colore” (colour sampling), hand cutting the gold plate into tesserae, choosing your favourite Venetian smalti colour and hand cutting it into tesserae (both using the hammer and hardie and the chopper). This creation can be taken home by guests (in a little gift bag) as a souvenir of the micro mosaic making process. There will be the option to have a cocktail in the Art Café (garden) or in the Colour Library.

Orsoni Venezia 1888

Mosaic making

A neverending rainbow of glass tilesOrsoni is the last furnace allowed to operate with fire in the city of Venice. It’s the historic Venetian manufacturer that since its foundation in 1888 uses the same techniques to produce 24k gold leaf mosaics, coloured gold and Venetian “smalti”, in thousands of tones and shades. Here, glass is forged with colourants at high temperatures, giving life to Orsoni’s unique products. The company’s colour library includes more than 3,500 different enamels. A multi-coloured sample panel was displayed for the first time at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889, by the founder Angelo Orsoni (skilled in making crystal, coloured glass and aventurine) who wanted to show that an ancient medium like mosaic deserved a place of honour, alongside the most avant-garde techniques. Years later, Gaudí – inspired by the Orsoni enamels – used them to decorate his Sagrada Familia. Orsoni proudly preserves its heritage, while concentrating on design and innovation. In 2003, the company was incorporated into the Trend Group.
