Uncover the secrets of an ancient craft

24 hours (6 days x 4 hours)$1,000

The goldwork couching technique is one of Russia’s oldest and most exquisite artisanal traditions. It emerged back in the 14th century, and was used in religious garments as well as in traditional folk costumes or luxury fashion designs. This meticulous craft is almost non-existent today, which makes it even more special. Different foundations can be used, from paper to birchbark, depending on local traditions and the purpose of the garment. During this course, you will learn the couching stitch, try couching across card and develop a number of useful skills, such as using a frame. Metal thread work requires both hands to be free to handle the threads correctly, so the frame has to support the fabric and keep the tension tight and firm. You will also use metallic cord, sequins and cannetille embroidery.
