Wood, alabaster, metal, resin but also burnt gesso and antlers naturally shed by Scottish Red Deers. Tom Plamer’s work oscillates between the Fine and Decorative art across a wide range of disciplines. Despite studying Fine Art to foundation level, British born Palmer, is almost completely self-taught and as he believes that “not having too much knowledge of a particular technique, or material, is very liberating and allows you to develop your own interesting responses, rather than being weighed down by preconceived notions of a craft practice”, has devised his own method of working. Taking inspiration from the Medieval and Renaissance European world, as well as the art of Japan, Tom Palmer examines these historic sources though a contemporary lens, in the pursuit of something new and unexpected.
