Takeshi Kitamura, from The Ateliers of Wonders series

The photograph depicts a close-up of a fabric seen at the atelier of the Japanese National Living Treasure. Kitamura revived the ancient ra and tate-nishiki weaving techniques, which became obsolete in the Middle Ages due to their complexity. The ra textile is characterised by its delicate mesh, while the tate-nishiki textile uses warp yarns to create patterns.
