Pattern of Crafts

The stone panel is hand-carved from pure white marble using age-old techniques and adapted technologies that have been passed down over generations. The geometric shapes forming high and bas-relief have been finely carved out of a piece of marble as if it were a white sheet of paper on which the artisan had “drawn” the shapes.

Exhibition curator Sebastian Herkner took the geometric pattern of the terrace of the Basilica of San Giorgio, on San Giorgio Maggiore island, and invited selected master artisans to interpret this lace-like octagonal pattern in a graphic artwork.
