The formal interpretation of this bar is as a mental straitjacket. The marquetry represents the intellect: abundant, tortuous, delicate. The polished highlights and rich darks reflect the structure of our thoughts: those on the surface and those we keep to ourselves. The rigid structure shows the strength of the prejudices we bear. It conflicts with the curves of the pattern and deforms them.
