Enigma

The handmade copper vessel is hammered on an anvil and finished with gold and tin leaves, using an ancient metal technique. The sculpture is decorated with a cedar wood branch. Enigma’s full title is Enigma: What I was made for? Where are my other parts?  It invites the viewer to question the story of the object, its original form, and the techniques and tools used in its making process.

The idea for this piece stems from Akis's research on ancient crafting techniques of the Aegean region. Working with a team of archaeologists, scientists and conservators, Akis looks for the answers to complex technical questions, travelling into the minds of ancient craftspeople. The artisan often studies pieces of objects, trying to join them together and understand the original form of the object. Akis believes that craft can open conversations between viewers and objects, and invites viewers to observe the vessel carefully so as to try to learn its story and imagine the making process.
