Conversations Ex Situ

This installation is created in a collaboration between multidisciplinary artist Jérémy Gobé and five migrant craftswomen of la Fabrique Nomade: Anna-Karina Raga (jeweller), Faten Al Ali (ceramicist), Fiorella Gonzalez (crocheter), Ghazaleh Esmailpour Qouchani (jeweller) and Serap Karabulut (embroiderer).

The installation comprises five books and their case, decorated with five different craft techniques to represent different species of corals. The books retrace the making process of the project, as well as biographies of each artisan.

This collaboration was created under the patronage of LVMH’s Métiers d’Excellence.

The term ex situ literally means 'off-site'. It comes from the language of science, where it indicates something that develops outside its original environment, which has moved to survive. Each of the five craftswomen found the strength to leave a hostile and dangerous environment, for the good of their loved ones and themselves. Despite their circumstances - insecurity, lack of space, equipment or means - they continued to practise their craft.

Jérémy invited the five craftswomen to reproduce a coral species that he had carefully chosen for each of them, according to their skills, techniques and personalities. Jérémy’s goal is to show the public the beauty of these animals that are so important for our planet, while supporting the women’s creative development. Conversations Ex Situ consists of several individual pieces that are all part of a larger creation, in the manner of coral polyps that, joined with others and sharing the same limestone skeleton, form a coral reef.
