A sustainable philosophy

  • • Yuliya used to work in an international environmental organisation
  • • She has two master degrees: one from Ukraine and one from the UK
  • • She considers herself both an eco-activist and a potter

Ecology is not an empty word for Yuliya Makliuk, she places it at the centre of everything she does. A well-known environmental activist in her home country, she is one of the founders of the youth movement against climate change in Ukraine and a member of the UN's international climate negotiations. In 2017, Yuliya started her journey as a potter and now today, everybody can admire and buy her beautiful objects. What sets her apart from other ceramicists is her approach, her method of making ceramics puts sustainability at the forefront at every stage of production, and her finished items send a clear environmental message. Her zero-waste philosophy and fantastic objects make Yuliya’s pottery a very 21st century venture and a feast for the eyes too.

A red donut teapot

This polished red clay teapot in a donut shape is handmade on a traditional pottery wheel. The shaped pot is trimmed, polished and fired to stoneware temperatures in an energy-efficient kiln. The fully vitrified red clay provides a smooth silky matt surface that does not absorb water. This allows to skip the second glaze firing and thus to save the energy. The resulting effect resembles the famous Yixing ceramic ware.
