Paper, patience and passion

  • • Yiye is a paper roll artist
  • • Her works are made with thousands of paper strips
  • • She is passionate and absorbed by her work

Educated in art in her native China, Yiye Wang came to Paris for her master’s degree in digital communications and began to work in web design. Quite unexpectedly, she found her real passion in paper rolling. She worked on this new craft in every free moment she had, until she was able to devote herself to it full time in 2017. Working from her home with paper, a pair of scissors and glue, Yiye cuts strips of paper, rolls them and arranges them into illustrative artworks. She spends two months on each of her works using thousands of paper rolls. Although many consider paper a soft material, Yiye insists that it can be as strong as the trees it is made from. Her work has attracted luxury houses like Prada and Dior, to decorate their jewellery and handbag window displays.

Face

This is the colourful portrait of a face that looks very peaceful. This work uses large and small paper rolls. A large number of bright colours are used to express the complexity of the world, while the calm face under the colours represents a calm state of mind. The paper rolls are arranged according to the muscles of the human face.

Dreamer

This work is a profile portrait of a woman, but there is a vague and idyllic landscape in it as well. This work has a different effect from every angle, like the feeling of ups and downs flowing between the mountains and rivers. The inspiration for this piece comes from traditional Chinese ink painting.

Fantasy

This work is a colourful portrait of a young man made with thousands of strips of rolled paper. Circles and zigzag lines merge into one harmonious composition, symbolising hope and fantasy for the artist.

Pure

This work achieves a strong visual impact by merging strips of various colours together. Thousands of strips of paper are rolled together and arranged to form the portrait of a person’s face in a vivid colour palette.

Vague

This is a paper art showcase for Dior's new jewellery line. The design is divided into three layers, so that the jewellery pieces can be placed between each layer. The transition from a flat shape to a three-dimensional effect is made by rolling strips of paper.
