Preserving glass art traditions

  • • Vineta is a professor at the Art Academy of Latvia
  • • She aims to inspire younger generations
  • • For her, traditions are the basis of the present

Vineta Groza knows a lot about glass. She masters many techniques, which she passes on to the new generation of glass artists at the Art Academy of Latvia. She was and still is inspired by the materiality of glass, the variety of its applications and its functionality. This passion led her to choose the career of a glass artist. Vineta not only teaches younger generations and creates glass art herself, she is also one of the founders of the Glass Art and Studies Centre, which continues the historical idea of a glass workshop and promotes the craft of glassmaking, creating educational exhibitions that provide an insight into the latest achievements in Latvian glass art.

Untitled

The main inspiration for this hand blown glass sculptural work is the changing landscapes in Latvia. This piece is particularly influenced by the winter landscape as spring approaches, creating an increasing contrast between snow and soil. The contrasts in the glass sculpture are accentuated by the insertion of graphite and melted fabric.

Wish

This series of semi-transparent blown glass sculptures was inspired by the Latvian spring landscapes. The sculptures combine and contrast glass with aluminium elements. The series was inspired by a poem by Latvian poet Imants Ziedonis. The poem ponders how spring has arrived almost by surprise, “as if in its Sunday best” (represented by the glass) “finding us in our work clothes” (represented by the aluminium).

The Grey Stories

A fortuitous accident gave life to this hand blown glass sculpture. A stone was placed on the glass and the dark transparent glass rather unusually bent itself around the stone rather than breaking. The impossible became possible. The name of the artwork was inspired by Pelēkie akmens stāsti, one of the most emotionally powerful works of Latvian writer E. Birznieks-Upītis (1871-1960).

Pastāvēs, kas pārvērtīsies

This colourful sculptural piece, made from glass fused in a sand mould, represents the neverending battle between oppositions, contrasting purple and red glass as well as different surface textures. The inspiration for the piece comes from the work of Latvian poet, playwright, translator and politician Rainis (1865-1929).
