Woodwork with mechanical details

It was a long journey for Stephan Siepermann to discover his true love of crafts and how he could forge a career out of it. The voyage began with his passion for music, so he started off spending three years guitar making. Valuable though this experience was, it was his love of carpentry that won over his passion for music. His next training, was an apprenticeship as a furniture restorer specialising in medieval wooden furniture, based in Kevelaer, Germany. During these three years he mastered woodturning, wood staining and learnt how to construct small parts for restoration. But throwing caution to the wind, he switched his attention once again, this time to concentrate on design, studying at the Design Academy Eindhoven for four years to expand his creative vision of crafts. Today, his unique combination of crafts and creative ideas is best illustrated in his playful pieces, such as Mr Knox, a safe with a wooden mechanism, or Locky, a series of reinterpreted archetypal sports lockers made from wood. By translating metal cabinets and intricate details such as the locks and the safe mechanism into wood, Stephan shows how precision matters – but you can still have fun, as he adds a humorous touch.

Gorilla
This birch plywood gorilla is the first example of a new series Stephan Siepermann is working on, of animal shaped furniture objects. The gorilla is a detached cabinet or bookshelf but could also be a room divider and above all quite an impressive object. This series tells a story about our world and its precious inhabitants. 'Aniwalls' are real size trophies of striking wild animals which double up as useful furniture objects.

Half-timber case
This new showcase is inspired by the half-timbered houses in Germany.
The details are in the construction of the volume and the connections of the beams. Strong timber is combined with tender padding, in this case coloured glass. This showcase a beautiful example of translating tradition into contemporary design.

Mr Knox humidor
This beautiful cigar case is the newest member of the Knox family and it is crafted out of the most exclusive timbers such as dark walnut and Spanish cedar. Like many of Stephan's projects, this is a clear example of a fruitful collaboration between modern production techniques and good old manual labour. The timbers for Mr Knox humidor are hand selected and combined into durable panels and then partly laser cut for optimal and necessary precision.

Mr Knox 99 percent safe
Mr Knox is a funny translation of a heavy steel vault into a smart and playful wooden piece of furniture. The CNC cut gears fit perfectly together which enables the closing system to work exactly as its metal counterpart. The cabinet is 99.9 percent safe and come with a beautiful 'gold bar' made of wood and two adjustable boards.
