Wafer-thin ceramics

  • • Sara was born in Wales
  • • She apprenticed for ceramicist Kate Malone
  • • She has a BA in Ceramics from Cardiff Metropolitan University

When one looks at the pieces Welsh-born Sara Dodd creates, it’s hard to believe that they are ceramics, so masterful and distinctive is her creative approach. Sara uses slip, liquid clay, to paint and create wafer-thin ceramic pieces. Afterwards, by repetition, the artisan transforms the porcelain into sculptures and wall-based installations. Her works are often unglazed and so the colour pigments are added into the clay body itself by hand before she can begin using them. This unconventional approach is what makes Sara Dodd’s ceramics truly special. She strives to capture freedom and individuality in her pieces, to seize a moment in time. Sara’s work is a frequent guest at international exhibitions like New York Ceramics and Glass Fair and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

Journey

A wall-hung sculpture created from porcelain and mounted in a hand-painted white tray frame. Around 400 individual porcelain layers have been assembled to create Journey. A deep blue slip contrasts the pure white and creates two triangles, drawing the viewer's eye to the centre of the piece.

Decipher

Thin ribbons of white porcelain are hand rolled and cover the entire surface of this wall-hung artwork. The lengths are applied not following a design or pattern but instead allowing Dodd to work in a meditative state and letting her hands work intuitively.

Achill Sky Study II

Inspired by a trip to Ireland, this piece features an early dawn landscape as dew and mist rise off distant mountains. Its location, Achill, is significant for Dodd and holds historic family ties. The artwork uses three shades of deep blue stain to contrast with the pure white porcelain and wooden white tray frame.
