Ceramics as a total art

  • • Roberto’s work is deeply rooted in the land he is from
  • • A fascination with the concept of the void led him to ceramics
  • • He designs his pieces in the moment of making with his hands

Born and raised in Pitigliano, in the Tuscan Maremma, Roberto Polidori, after exploring painting, conceptual art and architecture, arrived at ceramics. In 1977 he opened his atelier, literally saving the ancient traditions of ceramics and majolica, and reaffirming the high cultural and expressive value of the potter. Reinterpreting methods and materials, Roberto creates collections with specific identities: Riflessi e Risonanze, using the rare technique of luster; Terre e Foglie di Maremma, rooted in the nature of the region; Maiolica Archaica, recalling medieval shapes and colours. Roberto has opened his practice up to collaborations with artists and to the transmission of his know-how. After training many apprentices, currently his three children Laura, Giovanni and Alessandro work with him.

This double ringed bottle-vase is a complex creation made by Roberto Polidori. Every part of the finely decorated piece is handmade on the lathe and assembled. The precious luster majolica is enriched with gold and platinum during the third firing.

Terre e Foglie di Maremma Collection

In this collection, the artifacts are shaped on the lathe. The colours are given by the clays collected and selected by Roberto Polidori in his local area: white, red, grey, ochre. The decorative motif is made up of leaves that have fallen randomly and messily onto the pieces left outdoors in front of the workshop.

Pietre Esuli ringed vase

This triple ringed bottle-vase is a very complex creation made by Roberto Polidori. Every part of the piece is handmade on the lathe and assembled. Made with ferrous silicon clay, then brush enamelled with vitrified enamels and devitrified enamels with inclusions of volcanic origin inside.

Piatto da pompa

Part of the Riflessi e Risonanze collection, this luxury plate was shaped on the lathe, in precious luster majolica, and then enriched with gold and platinum in third firing. A unique and precious story is depicted on the plate: every piece tells a different tale. Roberto Polidori is a painter, a storyteller and a master ceramicist at the same time.

Sun cup

Two-handled cup in mezzamaiolica (terracotta coated with a veil of white and painted earth), decorated with an anthropomorphic Sun taken from the medieval ceramic iconography, in copper green and manganese brown. Shape, decoration and the craquelle surface give the product a medieval look.
