Electric wooden cars

  • • Reto makes wooden car kits that can be assembled
  • • His specialities are CNC machining, electronics and laser cutting
  • • He holds a degree in theoretical physics

When Reto Nardini was a child, he had a dream, where he installed a mechanic part in a car. “There was a profound sense of calmness and a remarkable state of mind I had in this otherwise random activity,” he recalls. After 30 years of experimenting with orthopedic leg covers, modular wooden tree-of-life and dolls, Reto once again turned to cars. Today, he makes car kits that can be assembled and dismantled by his customers that bring together his physics, technology and woodworking knowledge. With these car kits, Reto wishes to encourage others to work hands-on with both electronic parts and basic natural materials, such as wood, as well as to provoke a conversation on how electronics changes the way we perceive nature and interact with one another.

Oak ski set

Reto Nardini crafted these two scaled wooden sports cars, here showcased in a snowy alpine scenery, following a spontaneous idea he had of developing a set of oak skis to be fitted onto the already existing smaller sports car. Included are the two oak wheels with indentations for the driven rear axis.

This sports car was handcrafted from wood and placed in a snowy winter scenery in the Swiss Alps. Reto Nardini made this car in a way that any customer could assemble it from a kit, which is designed to offer an enjoyable hands-on experience.

Sitting on the wood stairs of a historic Swiss granary house that dates to 1741, Reto Nardini’s compact wooden car comes in a partially pre-assembled form as a kit that allows the customers to enjoy an assembling experience.

This is a wooden vintage sports car that is proportionally scaled to the size of a hand, here seen surrounded by autumn leaves. While it comes in a more complex version, Reto Nardini wished for this particular concept to accentuate the customer participation, while also reducing the manufacturing effort that is required for its assembling.

Using fir and beech wood, Reto constructed this scaled sports car to be driven around with remote control electronics. When making this piece he was questioning whether there ever comes a point, when technological development is no longer fulfilling basic needs, but instead can serve to help us experience nature, material and physics.
