Puzzle paintings

  • • Pierre-Henri first studied cabinetmaking
  • • His craft gives him balance in his life
  • • He was named "Meilleur Ouvrier de France" in 2015

Pierre-Henri discovered marquetry while studying cabinetmaking at the École Boulle in Paris. The craft was a true revelation for one that describes himself as "rather impatient": he discovered infinite patience working with meticulousness and precision for hours on end. After working for a few years in France, Italy, and the Réunion Island, Pierre-Henri ran the marquetry workshop of the École Boulle from 2011 to 2016. Whilst keeping his own atelier and teaching the younger generation, an activity he describes as highly enjoyable and very important to him, the craftsman was awarded the prestigious title of “Meilleur Ouvrier de France” in 2015. Today, he mixes woodwork with other materials such as mother of pearl, parchment, horn and gilding.

Kholog

This marquetry painting was inspired by a trip to Pamir, Tajiskistan. Kholog is its capital, nestled in the rugged mountains. The brutality of the desert landscape inspired Pierre-Henri Beyssac to create this painting upon his return.

Reflet

Reflet is like a mirage. A marquetry painting where the moire of the lemon tree never ceases to vibrate with the light. The blue amber, inserted in a geometrical way, turns out to be slightly left, not quite symmetrical, not quite parallel.

Width 407 cm

Traversée

This painting is part of Pierre-Henri Beyssac’s 300x300 series, square format. Traversée, like the other paintings in the series, deals with the migration crisis, the closing of borders, the exodus of people and the questions that arise from it.

Variation n°1

This piece is the first in the variation series. The veneer elements are all taken from wood scraps. Pierre-Henri Beyssac composed them as he wished like a trend board. They are veneered with a thick layer of veneer, a technique that he is developing. The parchment background allows a play of contrast rarely explored in marquetry.
