Storytelling with patterns

  • • Pia Jensen creates new pieces as well as upcycling products
  • • The hexagon is a pattern that she keeps interpreting
  • • She is inspired by her travels

Textile artist and weaver Pia Jensen grew up in an artistic home in Copenhagen and made her first textile pieces as a teenager. Sewing, dyeing, knitting and drawing have always been an integrated and natural part of her world. A world she entered professionally at the age of 20 and has dedicated herself to for the past four decades. Professional skills, craftsmanship and experience – coupled with her keen aesthetic sense – results in handwoven rugs, throws and scarves combined with site-specific and decorative projects. Pia Jensen has vast experience and a distinct poetic sense that allows her to see the world through a textile lens. A world where attention to detail and carefully designed colourways imbue her woven pieces with qualities of depth and history. Pia is a textile storyteller, inspired by her travels to exotic destinations, that often provide clues to the exciting patterns, colours and ways of living that fascinate and inspire her.

The table is running

This abstract decorative piece is made from wood and acrylic. The piece is handcrafted from birch veneer on acrylic, it is a reinterpreted, oversized table runner that is not actually a table runner, but a free-hanging piece based on the original reference that might function as a room divider.

Desert Dune

This rug is handwoven from four hand dyed hues of Norwegian spelsau wool on a linen warp. The mix of colours appears from Pia Jensen’s use of three treads at the same time, while weaving. Standing in a desert and seeing the light dance on the sand dunes is a tremendous experience. The wavy sea of sand is like a rug that wants to levitate and take to the sky. Pia sought to reproduce the phenomenon, although it took all her skills to make it stay put on the floor.

Alpaca throw

Each throw, handcrafted from baby alpaca fur with the twill technique, has a unique colourway, and for an added sense of life and energy, Pia Jensen uses a different weave on each side. Baby alpaca is one of the finest and softest qualities there is. The delicate fibres trap air and can be used to weave warm, lightweight throws.

Syrian silk shawl

This shawl is woven from hand-spun Syrian silk that Pia Jensen bought directly from the spinner while on a visit to Syria in 2010. In Syria, weavers turn the hand-spun silk into narrow lengths of fabric and the spinner then joins them together with a delicate crocheted border. Pia sought to apply the same principle in her personal interpretation, where each of the seven shawls has its own unique combination of yarns and patterns.

The Sultan’s Palm Tree

This rug is handwoven from hand dyed Norwegian spelsau wool on a linen warp. In the city of Salalah in the south of Oman, the Sultan has a palace with a variety of palm trees that are not found anywhere else in Oman. The palms have a slender grey trunk with a dark brown line running through it. In this hot, tropical climate, even a pastel grey can seem radiant.
