Marbled furniture

  • • Pernille mostly works on paper and wood
  • • She has a master's from Central Saint Martins
  • • Her marbling technique stems from Japan

A drop of colour in a water basin is how Pernille Snedker Hansen’s magic starts. A new drop reacts to the former by spreading, interacting, and creating unique colour combinations. This antique refinement for book covers – the marbling technique – is Hansen’s tool. A tradition she repurposes to create one-off paper art, furniture pieces and unique floors that seem to flood the room. The colouring process is intuitive yet controlled, organic yet structured – and the polar concepts of attraction and retraction seem to be the dynamic that pushes her work and motivation forward. Working with this type of craftsmanship demands numerous experiments and hours in the studio. The result is interior spaces enriched with this slow, historical and colourful craft practice.

Matter of Movement

This piece is one of three in a series, where the constant movement of the colours is depicted as they float on the water surface. All three works are made in the same way with the same colours and the same procedure where a drop falls in the middle of the previous drop and create rings.

Never the Same furniture

Never the Same Furniture participated in the furniture fair in Cologne in 2016 together with the group Danish Design Makers. The surface of the furniture is made of hand marbled ash veneer. Colour pigments float on the surface of the water where the wood picks them up. The furniture is produced locally in Denmark.

Marbelous Wood - Refraction

In Marbelous Wood – Refraction, both the form of the parquet floor and the applied pattern are inspired by the refraction of light through a prism, where a graduating colour scale appears. The transparent marbling technique enters into a dialogue with the natural rings of the wood.

Marbelous Wood – Yellow Wave

Refraction is part of a more extensive series titled Marbelous Wood. The wood is adorned with a marbling pattern, a technique known from old book covers. The pattern and the yellow nuances of the floorboards create an experience of walking 'on' sunshine.

Transition tables

In this hand marbled dining table the colours, lines and patterns interact with each other on the surface and create a mesmerising effect.
