Textiles echoing the shades of nature

  • • Pauline has been a quilt maker for over 40 years
  • • Fabric, stitch and colours are the sole ingredients of her craft
  • • Her one-off quilts are both functional and artistic

Pauline Burbidge, Scottish quilt maker for more than 40 years, explained “I quite like the idea that my craft can only work with textiles. I like the way that light reacts with a folded piece of textile. The shading reminds me of nature.” She handcrafts beautiful quilts in her studio in the Scottish Borders, and a short conversation with her is enough to understand how blessed she feels, being able to express herself through her craft in such an inspiring environment. All Pauline's creations – both functional and decorative – echo the natural shadings of landscapes and wild plant-life, and bring to light not just her technical mastery but also her sophisticated sensitivity and her sincere need for self-expression.

Plantlife: Puglia

This is a textile artwork which can be used as a wall-hanging or single bed quilt. A rich textured double-sided, black and white quilt. The imagery is inspired by plant forms in Puglia, Italy. The designs are created by stitch and fabric crayon drawing. Two layers of cloth are finely stitched, using a long-arm quilting machine and hand stitching, sandwiching a layer of cotton wadding. Washed to finish.

Re-told stories: Pitt Rivers Legacy

A textile wall-hanging – textile landscape – a major project, inspired by a visit to the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. My stitch drawings developed from studying the collection, which I linked with imagery from my local rural landscape, to make the final quilt, stitching layers of black and white cotton fabrics and wadding together by hand and machine. Made to pay homage to those great inventors, makers, artists and craftspeople who have gone before us.

Fern strata

This is a textile collage wall-hanging, made from fine silks and cottons. The leaf shapes are created with Cyanotype printing, using the sun’s rays. Several layers of fabric and stitch make up the image; backing cloth, wadding and more stitching make up the finished textured piece. It is inspired by the natural world, leaf forms & fossilised leaves. The delicate layers of the blue silk catch the light in different ways throughout the day.
