Macramé magic

  • • Vasco was introduced to macramé at school
  • • He makes wall hangings of textile landscapes
  • • His studio's name means the "bored bearded man"

Vasco Aguas de Oliveira laughs when asked about his workshop’s name. “Well I wear a beard and macramé has been part of my life for 30 years and something I did whenever I was bored,” he says. An architect and graphic designer by training, it took a while for Vasco to turn his hobby into a more serious activity. Drawing inspiration from the ocean and nature, his pieces reflect his architectural eye and show his grasp of aesthetics. Macramé is a form of textile produced by using knotting techniques. Vasco uses kilometres of rope to build his macramé canvases, introducing weaving techniques to create layered patterns and effects. His intricate work is especially impressive in large-scale formats, which are more challenging but his favourite to work on.

Martinhal

Martinhal is a wall tapestry representing a striking view in the Algarve: the island located a few metres from Martinhal beach. Surrounded by the crystalline waters of the Atlantic, the dark rock is imposing to those who observe it from the golden sands of the beach. Commissioned by the Martinhal Family Hotels & Resorts, it took Vasco around 36 hours to create.

Vicente

Vicente is a wall tapestry reflecting the landscape of the western Algarve in an abstract way, with a special focus on the Vicentine coast. This area's topography is sometimes undulating, sometimes flat, but always covered by dense vegetation and illuminated by warm and striking sunsets. It took 39 hours to complete the wall hanging.

Somewhere in Alentejo

It took Vasco Oliveira around five days to create this wall hanging. The design for the cotton thread wall hanging, part of Vasco’s Textile Landscapes Series, was inspired by the beautiful landscape seen in Alentejo in Southern Portugal, with its sometimes arid, sometimes dried green fields and blueish late summer skies.
