Curving the uses of wood

  • • Nikos and his brother took over the family business in 2015
  • • He combines woodwork, leather craft and digital technologies
  • • He built his own router copy carver

Nikos Stavrakis originally studied information science and worked in this industry for a few years before returning to Athens where he joined his family’s workshop in 2008. He has learned the woodworking craft by experience, working next to his father since he was a child and experimenting on his own. In his work, Nikos challenges expectations of wood by using it in non-traditional contexts such as in wearable accessories, cases, and bendable surfaces. He masterfully combines different fields of knowledge such as wood and leather craft with 3D modelling and 3D printing. Working in an ethical and ecologically conscious way is a dimension Nikos takes seriously.

Shoulder bag

This minimalist shoulder bag is made with an oak frame with leather on top. Burl veneer decorates the flat surfaces and a colourless varnish protects it, so that the beauty of oak is highlighted. It can be worn on the shoulder, across the body or hand-held.

Macbook case

This case is made of a solid ash frame and elastic polymer lining. Dozens of wooden pieces decorate the flat surfaces to create a pattern inspired by the rising sun. It is finished with water-based, black satin varnish.

Curvy shoulder bag

This is a shoulder bag with rounded edges, made of solid maple and bent maple veneer. It took Nikos Stavrakis years of experimentation to make veneer bendable yet sturdy. This lightweight bag with leather pockets inside is finished with a water-based, colourless varnish.

Mon Menhir backpack

Originally drawing inspiration from Obelix's menhir, this backpack ended up with an aerodynamic design. The leather is dyed in black to provide a background for the oak's natural beauty. Hidden magnetic snap fasteners add to the minimalist design.
