The storytellers

  • • Nat and Andrea create pieces with a story behind them
  • • They combine materials with a special attention to sustainability
  • • They push furniture to the next level, breaking the boundaries of their craft

Hillsideout (antique art design) is a joint project by Andrea Zambelli and Nat Wilms which offers furnishing solutions that embrace art, design and the antique. Andrea comes from the world of antique restoration, while Nat studied fine arts and worked as a photographer and video artist. During the financial crisis in 2008 they found themselves rethinking their professions, finding a common path in Art Design. There are several ways to approach furniture making, ranging from the aesthetic side to the choice of materials to its practicality; Hillsideout’s projects begin with a story, there is always an old tradition, a myth or a historical event hiding within their work, a less known tale that is just too interesting not to be told.

Light Tropics screen

The Light Tropics screen represents a mask inspired by an indigenous people called the Caduvei that live in the Brazilian jungle. In the late 19th century, the Italian painter and traveller Guido Boggiani portrayed the Caduvei women with their outstanding body and face paintings made with urucù pasta. Hillsideout stylised these portraits using colourful elements like burnt Murano glass and naturally coloured woods from Brazil to emphasise the approach to wildlife.

Chaturanga chess table

Chaturanga chess table represented a large challenge for Hillsideout becoming one of their most beautiful, abstract and strategical games tables. The table is full of historical metaphors such as the legs shaped like cartridges and the Sanskrit word "chaturanga" refers to an ancient Indian strategy game.

Futbolin table football

To celebrate the 100th birthday of the inventor of table football, Hillsideout has created a majestic and functional piece of art made of different coloured woods and several metals. The table legs were inspired by rustic table legs used by monks in the Medieval Age and the handcarved shape is reminiscent of the mountains near Barcelona where the first prototype was made in 1936. This unique edition looks like a sculpture but it works perfectly like a game.
