Cherishing ceramic heritage

When Olga was studying in Denmark, during one of her walks on the beach, she found a piece of brick washed up by the sea. Its oval shape, designed by the force of water, made her think "Is this an object created by a man or by nature". She also realised "how old, and long-lasting ceramic craft is". Throughout her career she has supported endangered arts and crafts. In 2016, together with Irina Grishina, she opened August Design Studio. As a teacher at School of Form in Poznań she reminds her students that craftmanship comes with "collecting your own experience and making many mistakes on the way to find your own point of view".

Sea Anemone vase
The Kunstakamera collection is inspired by the baroque cabinet of curiosities, which were expressions of admiration for the wonder and complexity of the world. The handmade objects are manufactured in short series. Each piece has been made from stoneware clay, and glazed several times to achieve the intended effect.

Tut vase
Tut vases are created by combining smaller and larger cylindrical forms to give birth to funny, biomorphic shapes, like hybrids of a mushroom and a heron, or a crossbreed of a cactus and a droid. These vases combine two pottery techniques: one part is formed by hand, the other thrown on the potter’s wheel. All are made from stoneware clay coloured with engobes.

Unlikely Movements
The irregular shape of the vase mimics the material properties of the clay, which enables an object to be modelled freely. Pressing and pushing the walls of the pot makes them protrude differently in each piece. The vases were covered with engobe and several layers of glaze to achieve deep colours and a shiny surface.
