Turning wood into poetry

  • • Metka believes every piece of wood has its own story
  • • She is inspired by the beauty and imperfections of wood
  • • As an art historian she is also inspired by old architecture

Metka Zver is an art historian, so she tried to connect tradition and innovation into an art form that respects heritage while creating a new visual language. Her pieces are the result of the possibilities and challenges posed by her material: wood. Metka's wish is to show the life of the original piece of wood by revealing both its beauty and its flaws, the mistakes and injuries acquired in the course of its growth. The natural warmth of wood and the silky smooth feel of the surface offer a unique tactile satisfaction. Metka loves being creative and playing with new ideas. "Being an artisan is being free to express myself," she claims. She invites us to visit her in the brand new shop she just opened in the beautiful medieval town of Štanjel.

The Fig Flower

The upper part of this vessel is a plate that reminds us of a flower. The fig wood used was particularly gnarled and therefore full of interesting patterns. Missing parts of wood add to the dramatic impression. Walnut root wood was used for a dark and solid foot, which is a support and smooth counterpoint to the irregular upper part.

Bowl

This is a hand-turned bowl, made of hard walnut root wood. It represents a special challenge, but it allows for precise shaping and enables exquisitely smooth side walls.

Playing with Gold

This round shaped bowl on a small foot was made from walnut wood that had a lot of sapwood. It was stained with turquoise blue and white pigments, that allow the wooden base to shine through. In contrast with the blue and white hues are the golden rim and foot, that add a bit of festivity to the look.

The Red Foot

Almost round in shape, this small bowl shows the annual growth rings of the wood it is made from. The line shows the separation between the sapwood and the heartwood. This simple form is made interesting by one addition: a brilliant red foot.

Starry Night Bowl

This is a hand turned wooden vessel. The outside is painted with blue and gold pigments. The rim is accented with Renaissance-like gold paint.
