Alluring textiles

  • • Marjolein's embroidery is inspired by Haute Couture exhibitions
  • • Experimentation has resulted in innovative collaborations
  • • She teaches the Lunéville technique

Marjolein van der Heide’s story started when she decided to become a tailor, having chosen a completely different career path as a creative therapist. Growing up, her mother was an inspiration, teaching her to work with textiles. During her studies in Paris, she had the opportunity to admire garments by Dior and Chanel, which sparked her imagination and a desire to create similar pieces. Her epiphany culminated in her mastering the Broderie d’Art technique using the Lunéville needle. “This is a special technique where the embroidery is produced by working from the underside where the material is stretched onto an embroidery frame.” Using flourishes such as beads and sequins, her textiles become works of art.

Repeating pattern in gold colour

This image shows a detail of a larger embroidered design made up of repeated elements. It was created using the Lunéville embroidery technique with a beading needle on gold-coloured silk organza. On one element, the tambour embroidery technique is used. A tessellation was first applied in the middle with gold-coloured thread. The next layer is embroidered on top of it.

Border motif

This embroidered border motif is a small example of a design that can be used for the edge of clothing. The smallest vintage beads in the centre of the design are so tiny that they show best when attached irregularly. Precisely those details, in combination with the other materials, make it such a special design.

White border motif

The white border motif is embroidered on silk organza fabric. The beads and sequins are processed with the Lunéville embroidery technique. Transparent large sequins were added on viscose soutache braid. This creates a surprising effect in the design. A beading needle was used to attach the small stacked beads.

Burgundy embroidery detail

This vertically embroidered repeating pattern, consisting of different elements, layers and materials in various shades of the same rich burgundy colour, is designed for a top. Marjolein Van Der Heide uses this to show her students how embroidery should look on the front and back.

Black clutch bag

This black clutch bag is made with different Haute Couture embroidery techniques, such as the Lunéville technique. In addition to the beads and sequins, cord and soutache ribbon have also been used. The result is a richly decorated clutch bag. The ornament on the front is made of large glass tube beads and square sequins.
