Playing with paper

  • • Marie works with a scalpel and some dentistry tools
  • • She has developed her own hand embossing technique
  • • Time is an integral part of her artistic process

How can paper be embellished? How can its subtlety, softness, and complexity be revealed? As a paper sculptor, Marie Gobert approaches her work like an engineer, in a process of constant research. After an education in industrial design, Marie joined the packaging and events studio at Maison Chanel. This was a fortuitous first experience that turned into 15 fulfilling professional years. From here, she recalls her creative freedom and the exposure to the company's different disciplines, which greatly contributed to shaping her knowledge and experience of excellence. Marie now devotes herself to her own paper creations. Through repetition, imbrication, and extremely precise gestures, Marie plays with paper to create bas-reliefs, frames and compositions combining design and craftsmanship.

Paper Rosette

This finely handcrafted paper bas-relief has been worked in different layers of colour: white, blue, grey and black. The paper was die-cut and then layers were superimposed. The composition thus creates a rosette of irregular patterns.

Paper Mill

This delicate paper bas-relief was created from pieces with tinted edges and decreasing sizes, inserted into an embossed spiral, winding endlessly. The sizes and orientations of the pieces create a play of shadows that emphasises the volume and its movement.

Paper Chemistry

This paper bas-relief has been worked in different white and black layers, cut and folded by hand. The layers have then been superimposed to create a pattern that plays with depth. The layering of hexagonal cut-outs and the different levels creates a swarming effect evoking molecules in full effervescence.

Sun of Paper

This finely crafted bas-relief is made up of different layers of paper with tinted edges, assembled, creating a disc with a surprising relief. The play of light and shadow created by the layers evokes the effect of a shutter on a sunlight.

Paper Garden

Displayed under a glass bell, this paper sculpture is composed of hand cut and distorted paper blades, evoking wild grass. An autumn leaf, also cut and painted by hand, seems to have got caught in these blades, subtly evoking the detail of a garden.
